Baca Wraps Up Championship With Victory, DeForest, Johnson, Gentry, Dennett, Brown Other Winners At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...September 20...Grayson Baca of Brentwood scored the victory in the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was his fifth win of the season as he wrapped up his second division championship in the last three years.

Hunter Hammett of Oakley set the early pace ahead of Jewell Crandall of Antioch and Oakley's Charlie Bryant. Crandall slipped past Hammett to take the lead on Lap 2 before a yellow flag waved for Nicky Skidmore of Benicia. Crandall led Hammett and Baca on the restart, and Baca used a low pass in Turn 2 of the fifth lap to take second from Hammett. A high move in Turn 4 of the seventh lap gained Baca the lead from Crandall as James Thomson of Pittsburg settled into third.

A yellow flag waved on Lap 8, and Thomson had to make a pit stop to fix a dragging bumper. Baca led Crandall and Bryant on the next restart, but Todd Gomez of Antioch charged into third on the ninth lap. Bryant regained the third on the 12th lap, and Gomez stalled in Turn 4 with a flat tire a lap later. Baca led the restart with Bryant making a move around Crandall for second. Oakley's Aidan Ponciano also got by Crandall for third. Baca was not to be denied as he led the final circuits to win ahead of Bryant, Ponciano, Crandall and Daniel Braudrick of Vacaville

Shawn DeForest of Livermore won the 20 lap Late Model Main Event. This was his second win of the season as he continues his pursuit of the Xtreme Late Model Series championship.

The race had a restart following an Andrew Odgers of Mariposa spin in Turn 3. DeForest led Buddy Kniss of Oakley and Antioch point leader Rod Oliver of Yuba City on the start, but Oliver moved into second on Lap 2. Terry Kaiser of Vacaville started challenging Kniss for second before making the pass on the backstretch on Lap 8. DeForest and Oliver pulled away from the pack in a good battle for the lead. As they caught slower traffic, DeForest made the right moves to keep Oliver behind him. Oliver got up to the rear bumper of DeForest on the 19th lap, but DeForest kept his cool and brought it home to victory ahead of Oliver, Kaiser, Ray Trimble of Auburn and Odgers.

DJ Johnson of Stockton scored the victory in the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. This was the second straight win for the two-time champion following his victory two weeks ago in the Panfili Cup race. Bob Newberry of Brentwood was having a solid run in second when mechanical issues ended his race. However, Newberry has officially won his third championship in this division.

Bob Newberry led the first two three laps ahead of Johnson before Johnson went motoring by for first. Bob Newberry surrendered second to his nephew, Dylan Newberry of Brentwood, on the sixth lap. However, a yellow flag waved for a tangle between Eathon Lanfri of Milpitas and Ryon Siverling of Concord in Turn 4 on Lap 10. Dylan Newberry retired from the race at that point with Johnson leading Bob Newberry and Kevin Box of Bethel Island on the restart. Bob Newberry saw his good run end for a yellow flag on Lap 14. Johnson led Box and Siverling on the next restart, but Siverling spun in Turn 4, collecting Carson Hawkins of Santa Rosa for a Lap 18 yellow flag. Johnson led Box on the final restart, and they would score the 1-2 finish. Lanfri made a last lap pass on Jeff Scotto for third with Steve Maionchi of Sonora settling for fifth.

Greg Dennett of Livermore won the 15 lap BCRA Lightning Sprint Main Event. This was the sixth win of the season for Dennett, and he continues a solid bid to repeat as the series champion.

Dennett bolted into the lead at the start ahead of fellow heat race winner Matt Land of Elk Grove and Kennedy Ramirez of Placerville. Dennett and Land pulled away from the pack following a Lap 4 yellow flag for debris from the Bradley Schmidt of Placerville car. Jason Schostag of Hangtown had flipped in the heat race but got things together for the Main Event, and he started challenging Ramirez for third. Schostag made a move on the frontstretch on Lap 11 to claim third. Dennett pulled away from Land for the victory, but Schostag had problems on the last lap as Ramirez ended up third ahead of Cody Dayton of Placerville. Schostag settled for fifth.

Payton Gentry of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap 600 Micro Sprint Main Event. This was his fifth win of the season, which put him into a tie with San Jose's Buddy Chappell for the point lead. However, Gentry won the tiebreaker for the championship based on his win total.

Gentry bolted into the lead at the start ahead of previous winner and Matthew Linde of Pittsburg and Devon Zuffa of Oakley. Much like the previous race, this one was destined to go without a yellow flag. Gentry started to pull away from Linde and held a straightaway advantage by the halfway point. Chappell faded back to sixth and ended up lapped as Gentry sped to victory ahead of Linde, Zuffa, Ralph Sheehy of Half Moon Bay and this season's top rookie, Aniyah Scott of Brentwood.

Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was his seventh feature win of the season as he clinched the the division championship.

Brown bolted into the lead at the start ahead of Jason Higgins of Santa Rosa. However, Higgins spun in Turn 4 for the first of two yellow flags on Lap 1. Brown continued to lead Higgins and Matt Wirth of Oakland on the restart. The lineup continued to be the same following a Lap 6 yellow flag. Brown went on to win by nearly a straightaway ahead of Higgins. Wirth was the final lead lap finisher, followed by Ryder Holmen of Antioch and Hana Powell of Lodi.

Racing resumes next Saturday night with the Bill Bowers Memorial race offering increased purse money for the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars as well as the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks.
