IMCA Divisions Back At Antioch Speedway For Mother's Day Weekend
Antioch, CA...Antioch Speedway continues it's 65th Anniversary Season with a five-division program and a special race on the 3/8 mile clay oval this Saturday night. For Mother's Day weekend, the track will offer a ladies race in Hobby Stocks for novice racers.
The regular Pacific Coast Hobby Stock division will also be in action along with the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and 600 Micro Sprints.
The last time we saw the IMCA Modifieds at the speedway, seven-time reigning champion Troy Foulger of Oakley was scoring the victory ahead of Matt Kampfraat of Granit Bay and Tyler Browne of Antioch. Foulger visited Watsonville a couple of weeks ago and did decently with a third in the feature and a heat race triumph.
Andrew Pearce of Oakley saw his hopes of winning the season opener end on a tow truck hook. He made a visit to Merced last week but only managed a fourth place finish. He'll be out for a little redemption this week. Other drivers to watch for include reigning State champion Kate Robertson of Reno, Nevada, Matt Micheli of Live Oak and Paul Guglielmoni of Vacaville.
The IMCA Sport Modifieds are also making their first visit since the season opener. On that occasion, three-time champion Fred Ryland of Brentwood collected the victory ahead of Tanner Thomas of Atwater and Jeff Bentancourt of Brentwood. Bentancourt currently finds himself ranked second in the State point race. Thomas, meanwhile, has victories in the most recent races at Merced and Watsonville. He's currently second in points at Merced and leads Watsonville in front of that track's reigning champion, Danny Wagner of Bay Point.
Having won all three Dwarf Car races at Antioch so far, Wagner is aiming for his first Antioch win in Sport Modifieds. Other drivers to look for include three-time track champion Trevor Clymens of Brentwood, Al Johnson of Antioch, Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley and Trent Golden of Pittsburg. Golden finished third last week at Merced.
After three Hobby Stock races, Oakley's Hunter Hammett holds a four point advantage over James Thomson of Pittsburg. The duo are the only drivers with three Top 5 finishes this year, and Hammett has a pair of seconds to go with his win. Thomson picked up the victory two races ago. Following his third place finish in the borrowed Todd Gomez car, season opener winner Aidan Ponciano of Oakley has moved into third in the standings, 58 tallies out of the lead.
It's a wide open race for third with Antioch's Jewell Crandall trailing Ponciano by two points with Oakley's Brodie Garner two points behind Crandall. Currently, Nicky Skidmore of Benicia, Frank Furtado of Martinez, Daniel Braudrick of Vacaville, Kevin Brown of Oakley and Roseville's Phil Wilkins make up the balance of the Top 10 in the standings after three races.
In IMCA Stock Car competition, the wins have been earned by reigning champion Fred Ryland of Brentwood and 2023 champ Troy Foulger of Oakley. Ryland leads Foulger by just one point, while division newcomer Todd Gomez of Antioch is three points back in third and two ahead of three-time division point runner-up Jason Robles of Rio Vista. Robles finished second at the season opener as he looks for his first win of the season this week. His son Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista is fifth in the standings.
Last week, Buddy Chappell of San Jose collected his first ever 600 Micro Sprint feature win. Devon Zuffa of Oakley led early before mechanical issues sidelined him. Thanks to his heat race win that night, Zuffa only trails Chappell by six points in a tie with Petaluma's Garrett Hawkins, who finished second to Chappell at the opener. Charlie Kight of Antioch had his best effort yet in the division with a third place finish last week, followed by rookie Gabriel Monroy of Antioch. Monroy will be celebrating his birthday at the speedway this week.
Early on in the history of Antioch Speedway, then Promoter John Pershing Soares created the Powder Puff race for the ladies. In those days, ladies weren't even allowed in the pits, but this event drew much attention and support throughout the community. Local media at the time gave the race big coverage, and every year there were one or two of these races throughout the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Some of these races were every bit as entertaining as the regularly featured divisions.
A few years ago, management introduced the Mother's Day Minivan Race. Due to a lack of vehicles, the race failed to catch on. After the track held the first Denise McCown Memorial Ladies Race at the Hobby Stock Nationals last year, interest was renewed in bringing back the ladies race. Hobby Stocks will be the car of choice, and ladies with no experience are eligible.
This Saturday's show will be the last regular stock car program at the track until the Larry Damitz Memorial on May 30th, and the weather forecast calls for things to get a bit warmer. With all of the IMCA divisions, Hobby Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints on the bill along with the ladies race, this will be an entertaining show from start to finish.
The gates will open at 5:00 with the first race starting at 6:00.
Adult tickets are $20, Senior/Military $15, Kids (5-12) $15 and kids four and under free.
