Ryan Wins The Race, Shrader Champion In Dramatic Finish At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...September 13...Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event in dramatic fashion Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the second win of the season for Ryan, and he gained the lead and victory with the misfortune of Kenny Shrader of Pacheco. Shrader suffered front end damage while lapping a slower car with two laps remaining, but he still had a ninth place finish to win the championship.

It was IMCA Championship Night for the Sport Modified, Modified and Stock Car divisions, and the Dwarf Car title was on the line as well. The night also saw Bart Reid, Jim Reid, Lance Cline, Fred Baker, Chet Thomson, Ricardo Rivera and Ruth and Charles Yingling inducted into the Antioch Speedway Hall of Fame during intermission.

The championship night format had Shrader and Ryan on the front row, and Shrader bolted into the immediate lead ahead of Ryan and Trevor Clymens of Brentwood. Shrader started to pull away from the pack, leaving Ryan and Clymens to battle closely for second. By the halfway point of the race, Shrader was lapping slower cars, but he was making all the right moves.

Trouble with a slower car as he went by in Turn 4 of the 17th lap left Shrader's front end damaged. He limped around the track as Ryan went low in Turn 4 on Lap 18 to claim the lead. While Shrader headed to the infield, Ryan was doing his best to hold off Clymens in traffic. Clymens made a bold move in Turn 4, but Ryan closed the door and claimed the victory. Fred Ryland of Brentwood finished third, followed by Tommy Clymens Jr of Oakley and Al Johnson of Antioch.

Grayson Baca of Brentwood won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. The fourth win of the season for Baca clinched him his second division championship with one race remaining.

The race was filled with caution flags, and Charlie Bryant of Oakley led the first two laps before a Turn 2 pass put Baca into the lead. A yellow flag waved on Lap 5 for Maddie Motts of San Pablo in Turn 2. Baca continued to lead the way with Aidan Ponciano of Oakley moving into second. Following a Lap 8 yellow flag for Nicky Skidmore of Benicia, Jared Baugh of Pittsburg settled into third behind Baca and Ponciano.

A Lap 11 yellow flag for a Turn 2 crash eliminated both Jesse Paladino of Brentwood and Hunter Hammett of Oakley. Baca continued to lead Ponciano and James Thomson of Pittsburg on the restart. The scariest incident of the race saw Lily Mead of Watsonville roll in Turn 3. Baca led Ponciano and Thomson on the restart, but Thomson spun in the final turn as Baca brought it home to victory ahead of Ponciano, Bryant, Brodie Garner of Oakley and Baugh.

Troy Foulger of Oakley won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event. It was his second win of the season in this division, and he used it to wrap up his unprecedented seventh Modified championship.

Foulger started on the pole in the IMCA Championship Night format, and he raced into the lead immediately, followed by Andrew Pearce of Oakley and Katelynn Robertson of Reno, Nevada. Tyler Browne of Antioch slipped into third on the third lap. Foulger was steadily pulling away from Pearce when a yellow flag waved on Lap 8 as Gary Hetrick of Antioch spun in Turn 2. Foulger led Pearce and Jonathan Hagio of Prunedale on the restart.

On the 13th lap, Pearce spun in Turn 4, moving Hagio into second ahead of Browne. Robertson made a low pass in Turn 2 of the 15th lap to take third from Browne, but Browne reclaimed the position on Lap 17. Hagio saw his motor expire for a Lap 18 yellow flag. Foulger continued to lead the restart with Robertson making a big move in Turn 2 to take second from Browne. Foulger went on to victory ahead of Robertson, Browne, Pearce and Matt Kampfraat of Granite Bay.

Troy Foulger of Oakley returned to action in the IMCA Stock Car division and dominated the 20 lap Main Event for his third win of the season. Foulger finished seventh in the IMCA Nationals in Boone, Iowa a week earlier, and he was the Stock Car champion at Antioch last season. With his second place finish, Brentwood's Fred Ryland wrapped up the Stock Car championship.

The race got off to a rough start with a crash on the backstretch before a lap could be completed. Foulger led a lap before another yellow flag waved. Foulger resumed command on the restart ahead of State champion Austin Van Hoff of Chowchilla and Atwater's Justin Villanueva. They ran in that order until a low pass in Turn 3 of the 10th lap put Ryland into third. Mike Ficklin brought out a Lap 11 yellow flag.

Foulger continued to lead Van Hoff and Ryland on the restart. After another caution on Lap 13, Ryland started challenging Van Hoff for second as Foulger led. An inside pass on the back straightaway on Lap 19 put Ryland into second, but Foulger held a straightaway advantage by then. Foulger won ahead of Ryland, Van Hoff, Jason Robles of Rio Vista and Villanueva.

David Hays of Brentwood won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. After four second place finishes this season, this was the first career win for the division's Rookie Of The Year. However, he lost a close Championship battle to Concord's Travis Day, who finished second.

Day set the pace at the start ahead of Chris Durden of Hollister. Hays settled into second on Lap 2, and the yellow flag flew moments later for Russ Sieber of Elk Grove in Turn 3. Day continued to lead Hays and Durden on the restart. Hays started pressuring Day for the lead on Lap 6, and a yellow flag waved on Lap 9 for both Chris Durden and John Durden of San Juan Bautista in Turn 3. Day continued to lead Hays on the restart, but the race had a red flag on Lap 12 when Justin Bingman of Castroville and John Durden got together in Turn 3 with Durden doing an easy roll.

Day continued to lead Hays on the restart, but a low pass in Turn 3 of the 14th lap gained Hays the lead. Jason Lazzerini of Moss Landing moved into second, but Day made a low pass in Turn 3 on Lap 16 to reclaim the position. Day tried to make a move on the inside of Hays entering Turn 3 of the 19th lap, but there was traffic as Hays pulled down to protect his groove and maintain the lead. Day momentarily lost second but got back around Lazzerini in the final turn as Hays won ahead of Day, Lazzerini, Bingman and New Hall of Fame inductee Ricardo Rivera of Hollister.

Racing returns next Saturday night with Championship Night for the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks, Wingless Spec Sprints and 600 Micro Sprints. Also competing will be the Late Models, BCRA Lightning Sprints and Mini Stocks.
