Ryland Is A Double Winner, Hogge, Slaney, DeCarlo Win JD Willis Salute At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...August 23...Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. His third win of the season at Antioch came at the JD Willis Salute. It was also his third win in the IMCA Modified All Star Series, and that was good enough for him to clinch the the series championship.
Hogge raced into a lead at the start ahead of Antioch point leader Troy Foulger of Martinez and Tyler Browne of Oakley. The yellow flag waved for Jacob Mallet Jr of Oakley in Turn 4 on Lap 2. Hogge continued to lead Foulger and Browne from the restart through the Lap 10 yellow flag for a back straightaway crash involving Cody Burke of Salinas and Mallet.
Hogge continued to lead Foulger and Browne on the restart, but a low pass in Turn 4 the 13th lap gained Oakley's Andrew Pearce third. Hogge ran fast and smooth at the front of the pack over the remaining laps and collected the victory ahead of Foulger, Pearce, Browne and Doug Hagio of Prunedale.
Fred Ryland of Brentwood won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. It was his third Sport Modified win of the season. The win capped a two-win evening for Ryland, who also picked up the victory in the IMCA Stock Car feature.
The Sport Modified race had to be restarted when Trent Golden of Pittsburg spun in Turn 4. Brentwood's Jeff Bentancourt led the opening lap before Ryland and Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley both got by. At around the same time, incoming point leader Kenny Shrader of Pacheco spun in Turn 2, but he kept going back in 10th without a yellow flag. Buddy Kniss of Oakley settled into an early third.
Ryland caught slower traffic by Lap 12, but he made good moves to keep Ryan at bay. Another yellow flag finally waved on Lap 15 for Tommy Clymens Jr of Oakley. Ryland continued to lead Ryan on the restart, and Shrader capped a furious charge to the front as he settled into third. Despite one late yellow flag, Ryland scored the victory ahead of Ryan, Shrader, Kniss and Trevor Clymens of Brentwood.
Ryland's win in the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event was his fifth win of the season. He also used the win to clinch the championship with one point race remaining this season.
Mitch Machado of Rohnert Park led the first two laps before getting sideways in Turn 2, resulting in Jared Baugh of Pittsburg crashing behind him. Mitch Enos of Manteca took responsibility for his part in the incident and restarted in the back. State point leader Austin Van Hoff of Chowchilla took the lead on the restart ahead of Ryland and Machado.
Van Hoff pulled away from Ryland for a few laps, but Ryland steadily reeled him back in. The duo ran side by side for a few laps before Ryland went by on the outside down the front stretch on Lap 15 to take the lead. Ryland pulled away from Van Hoff to claim the satisfying win. Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista settled for third ahead of Enos and Jason Robles of Rio Vista.
Anthony Slaney of Martinez won the 20 lap Late Model Main Event. He has won all three of his Antioch starts this season.
Chester Kniss of Antioch led the first two laps before Slaney made an outside move on the front stretch to take over. Antioch point leader Rod Oliver moved into second on Lap 4 with Andrew Pearce of Oakley following him into third. Pearce quickly closed in on Oliver and the made a Turn 4 pass on Lap 9 for second. Slaney held about a straightaway advantage by then. Though Pearce cut the lead in half, Slaney brought it home to a satisfying win. Oliver settled for third ahead of Ray Trimble of Auburn and Xtreme Late Model Series point leader Shawn DeForest of Livermore.
Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. This was her first ever win, and she's the third generation for family to win at Antioch Speedway. Her Hall of Fame grandfather Terry DeCarlo Sr and father Terry DeCarlo Jr have also won at the speedway.
DeCarlo jumped into the lead at the start ahead of Brentwood's Hunter Hammett and Charlie Bryant of Oakley. The race got off to a fast start with DeCarlo catching slower cars by the sixth lap. She ran a smooth line on the bottom of the race track to keep Hammett at bay, and the only yellow flag waved on Lap 10 for James Thomson of Pittsburg.
DeCarlo stayed with the inside on the restart and led Bryant and Hammett. Aidan Ponciano of Oakley settled into third on Lap 12. DeCarlo set a good pace on the bottom, but again she caught slower traffic with three laps to go. As they exited Turn 2 on the last lap, Bryant got a good run on DeCarlo and took the lead. The leaders were running in slower traffic through Turns 3 and 4, and DeCarlo ducked down low and regained the lead and victory. Bryant settled for second ahead of Ponciano, point leader Grayson Baca of Brentwood and Hammett.
Peyton's Gentry of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap 600 Micro Sprint Main Event. The fourth win of the season for Gentry gained him little ground on incoming point leader Buddy Chappell of San Jose, who finished second
The race was destined to go all the way without a yellow flag as Gentry sprinted into the early lead ahead of Chappell and Aniyah Scott of Brentwood. Antioch racers Roberto Monroy and Charlie Kight pitted on Lap 6, and Oakley's Devon Zuffa retired from fifth a few laps later. Gentry went on to victory ahead of Chappell, Scott and Ryan Dotson of Fremont.
After taking the Labor Day Weekend off, racing returns on September 6th with the Panfili Cup for the Wingless Spec Sprints and the Butch Althar Memorial Hardtop race.
