Jared Baugh Wins Dean Cline Classic, Alfred Johnson Scores First Win At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...August 16...Jared Baugh of Pittsburg won the 50 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. It was the Fourth Annual Dean Cline Classic, and this was his second win in this race. Baugh gained the lead when point leader Grayson Baca of Brentwood had a mechanical failure, and he went on to victory from there.

Heat race winners Jewell Crandall and Josh Appelbaum, both of Antioch, Baca and Baugh started in the first two rows of the feature race, and Crandall jumped into the early lead ahead of Baca and Appelbaum. As Crandall and Baca pulled away from the pack, Baca'a car was smoking for a few laps. The race went 16 laps before a yellow flag waved for Aidan Ponciano of Oakley in Turn 4. Baca took the lead from Crandall on the restart as Baugh slipped past Appelbaum for third. Baugh made a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 22 to take second from Crandall before a yellow flag waved for Trevor Clymens of Brentwood. At the Lap 24 break, Baca led Baugh, Crandall, Daniel Braudrick of Vacaville and Appelbaum.

After the fuel break, Baca led Baugh on the restart, and Appelbaum moved back into third. A low pass in Turn 4 of the 25th lap gained Baugh the lead. Crandall was back in third on Lap 29 as Appelbaum and Braudrick tangled in Turn 4 for a yellow flag. Baugh led Baca and Crandall on the restart. A Lap 31 yellow flag waved as Cory Souza of Aromas saw his race end. Baugh continued to Baca and Crandall on the restart, but Baca made a Turn 2 pass on Lap 34 to take the lead. Unfortunately, Baca's transmission finally gave up on him on Lap 36.

Baugh now had the lead over Hunter Hammett of Oakley and Lily Mead of Watsonville. Mead and Antioch's Chris Long both passed Hammett on a lap 37 restart. Hammett saw his strong run end for the final yellow flag on Lap 45. Baugh resumed command on the restart. Crandall had made a pit stop on Lap 33, but she made a furious charge to the front. A low pass in Turn 2 on Lap 47 gained her second from Mead. Baugh brought it home to victory ahead of Crandall, Mead, Braudrick, Taylor DeCarlo of Martinez and final lead lap finisher Appelbaum.

Alfred Johnson of Antioch won the IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. The rookie driver led from the start, and this was his first career victory

Johnson jumped into the lead at the start ahead of Oakley's Joseph Pato. Both drivers were competing for their first win, and they steadily pulled away to a big advantage over the rest of the pack. Mark Garner of Antioch was an early third with Brentwood's Trevor Clymens settling into fourth on Lap 14. Johnson started to pull away from Pato, and Clymens made a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 16 to take third from Garner. Johnson kept his cool in the waning laps to bring home his first victory. Pato settled for second ahead of Clymens, Garner and Fred Ryland of Brentwood.

Fred Ryland of Brentwood won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. This was the fourth win of the season for the current point leader and the 81st win of his career at the track.

The race was destined to go non-stop, and Jared Baugh of Pittsburg led the opening lap ahead of Les Friend of Galt. Ryland made a Turn 4 pass on Friend to gain second on Lap 2 and went low in Turn 2 of the third lap to take the lead from Baugh. As Ryland started to pull away, Manteca's Mitch Enos made a Turn 4 pass on Lap 8 to take third from Friend. Enos set his sights on Baugh for second. On the 17th lap, Enos went low in Turn 4 and gained second from Baugh. However, Ryland had a big advantage by then and brought it home to victory ahead of Enos, Baugh, Friend and Terry DeCarlo Jr of Martinez.

Tom Brown of Santa Rosa scored another convincing victory in the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was the sixth-consecutive win for the current point leader.

Brown led from the outset ahead of Jason Higgins of Santa Rosa and Don Abitz of Pittsburg. Brown steadily built a straightaway advantage in the non-stop race to claim the victory ahead of Higgins. Abitz settled for third ahead of Matt Wirth of Oakland and Ryder Holmen of Antioch.

Logan Mitchell of Santa Cruz won the 20 lap WMR Midget Main Event. Mitchell is the current point leader, and his fifth win of the season brings him closer to the championship with two races remaining.

Mitchell bolted ahead of heat race winner Kinser Claridge of Gold Coast, Queensland at the start. The race went without a yellow flag, and Mitchell built nearly a straightaway advantage over Claridge by the time the checkered flag waved. Cody Gray of Auburn was a solid third, followed by San Jose's Anthony Bruno and Terry Nichols of Delano.

Racing continues next week with the Third Annual JD Willis Salute. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars will be competing that night along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks, Late Models and 600 Micro Sprints.
