Foulger Wins His Third Hetrick Memorial Saturday Night At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...June 28...Troy Foulger of Oakley won the 20 Lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the 10th Annual Hetrick Memorial race, and Foulger's third win in this event paid him $1,000. It was also Foulger's first win in the IMCA Modifieds this season and 80th combined career win at the speedway.
Looking to repeat as the winner of this race, Oakley's Andrew Pearce set the early pace ahead a Foulger, but a yellow flag waved for Tyler Browne of Antioch on Lap 2. Pearce continued to lead Foulger and Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas on the restart. Pearce and Foulger pulled away from the pack, and an outside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 6 put Foulger into the lead. A yellow flag waved on Lap 8 for Jacob Mallet Jr of Oakley in Turn 2.
Foulger continued to set the pace on the restart with Hogge slipping past Pearce for second. Eric Berendsen of Antioch brought out the final yellow flag on Lap 12, and Foulger continued to lead Hogge and Pearce on the restart. Pearce made a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 15 to take second from Hogge, but Foulger had started to pull away. Foulger went on to victory ahead of Hogge, Pearce, Jim Pettit II of Prunedale and Tyler Browne of Antioch.
Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. This was his first win of the season as he continues to be a strong contender for the division championship.
Ryan had a front row starting position and bolted ahead of point leader Kenny Shrader of Pacheco at the green flag. Brentwood's Fred Ryland settled into an early third, and State point leader Danny Wagner of Bay Point made it a four-car battle out front by the midpoint of the race. Ryan caught slower traffic, but he made the right move on both occasions to keep Shrader behind him.
The only yellow flag of the race flew on Lap 14 when Mark Garner and Joseph Pato, both of Antioch, spun exiting Turn 2. Ryan continued to lead Shrader and Wagner on the restart. Ryan pulled away over the final few laps for the satisfying win. Shrader settled for second ahead of Wagner, Ryland and Buddy Kniss of Oakley
Grayson Baca of Brentwood won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. The win was his third of the season and gained him the point lead from James East of Oakley, who suffered a mechanical failure while leading.
East set the early pace ahead of Michaela Taylor of Brentwood and Oakley's Kevin Brown. Brown moved into second on Lap 2 with Baca following him into third. A low pass in Turn 4 of the sixth lap gained Baca second from Brown, and East caught slower traffic. East was making good moves around the slower cars, but a yellow flag for Aidan Ponciano of Oakley on Lap 8 bunched the field.
East had a broken front end on the restart and drifted into the Turn 4 wall, giving Baca the lead. East brought out a yellow flag as his race came to an end. Baca led Jewell Crandall of Antioch and Hunter Hammett of Oakley on the next restart, but James Thomson of Pittsburg moved past Hammett for third on Lap 11. An eventful Lap 13 saw a frontstretch crash, involving Frank Furtado of Martinez, Oakley's Brodie Garner and Rick Rogers of San Pablo. Crandall had lost a bumper, forcing her to make a pit stop.
Baca continued to set the pace on the restart with Thomson and Hammett in pursuit.
As Baca led the way on Lap 17, Hammett made a Turn 4 pass on Thomson for second. Trevor Clymens of Brentwood completed his charge from the back of the pack with a Turn 2 pass on Thomson for third a lap later. Baca was the happy winner ahead of Hammett, Clymens, Thomson and Lily Mead of Watsonville.
Buddy Kniss of Oakley won the 20 lap Late Model Main Event. He had just been passed for third a couple laps before the leader got sideways and collected the second place car, enabling Kniss to grab the lead and eventual victory.
Shawn DeForest of Livermore set the early pace ahead of Kniss and point leader Rod Oliver of Yuba City. Oliver briefly surrendered third to Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas, but Oliver made a Turn 2 pass on Lap 3 to reclaim the position. Hogge headed for the pits a lap later. DeForest was setting a good pace as Kniss and Oliver battled for second. Oliver finally made the pass on Lap 14.
Two laps later, DeForest got sideways exiting Turn 2 and collected Oliver. Kniss drove past the melee to grab the lead as the DeForest recovered in second. Kniss won ahead of DeForest, Oliver, Randy Miramontez of Santa Rosa and Joey Ridgeway of Antioch.
Mitch Enos of Manteca won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. This was his first win in this division, and it came after making a late pass on Dan Gonderman of Antioch.
Gonderman had a front row start and charged into the lead at the green flag with Enos settling into second over Mitch Machado of Rohnert Park. Gonderman started to pull away for a few laps, but Enos began running a consistent line and caught Gonderman by the ninth lap. Nick Caughman Jr of Richmond spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 11 yellow flag.
Gonderman continued to lead Enos and Machado on the restart, but point leader Fred Ryland of Brentwood made an outside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 12 for third. Enos kept taking looks to the inside of Gonderman before making a Turn 4 pass on Lap 16 to grab the lead. Enos would lead the rest of the way to win with Gonderman settling for second ahead of Ryland, Machado and Caughman.
The speedway will take a two-week break with racing returning on July 19th. The IMCA Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars will be back in action along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks, Wingless Spec Sprints, Mini Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints.
