10th Annual Hetrick Memorial Scheduled For Saturday night At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...The 2025 season is nearing the halfway mark, and the championship battles are heating up in most of the divisions at Antioch Speedway. This Saturday night will be another special occasion. It's the 10th Annual Hetrick Memorial race, paying tribute to Jerry and Mary Ann Hetrick.
Jerry Hetrick raced the Winged Sportsman class at the speedway throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Though he didn't have a big budget, he managed to run wheel to wheel with the top competitors of the day and ranked in the Top 5 in the standings on multiple occasions. He was also one of the first drivers to break into the 15 second bracket and was a track record holder.
When Jerry retired from racing at the end of the 1981 season, which also marked the end of the old Sportsman division, he didn't leave the racing community. He helped any of the competitors who came to him, including his son, Gary Hetrick. He influenced several young racers who went on to achieve big things, including two-time Antioch Speedway champion Kellen Chadwick of Oakley.
Kellen's division of choice, the IMCA Modifieds, will be part of the lineup along with the IMCA sanctioned Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars, Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks and Late Models. Both the Modified and Sport Modified divisions will be competing for an increase purse.
As the other drivers jockey for position to challenge IMCA Modified point leader Troy Foulger of Oakley, they got a little bit of good news last time out. The six-time division champion had his worst finish of the season. The bad news is he still finished third. Though he hasn't won yet this season, Troy does have four second place finishes and a 14 point lead over 2023 State champion Andrew Pearce of Oakley. Pearce has won twice this year and won this particular race last season.
Reigning State champion Jacob Mallet Jr of Oakley has a three point lead over State point leader Katelyn Robertson of Reno, Nevada in the battle for third with Watsonville point leader Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas 19 points back in fifth. Hogge has two wins at Antioch so far and four at Watsonville. At the most recent race, it was Vacaville's Randy Shafer scoring the victory.
Meanwhile, Brentwood's Trevor Clymens was the winner of the recent IMCA Sport Modified race. His second win of the season moved him to within five points of point leader Kenny Shrader of Pacheco in a close battle. Shrader had problems while leading with two laps to go that night and slipped back to an eighth place finish.
Oakley's Jason Ryan Jr's night was even worse as he ended up 13th and fell nine points out of the lead in third. Tommy Clymens Jr of Oakley remains in the hunt, 19 points back in fourtth.
State point leader Danny Wagner of Bay Point missed a race, but the State and Watsonville point leader is fifth on the strength of four Top 5 finishes. He's still looking for his first win in this division at Antioch, but he has four victories so far at Watsonville. Wagner is just nine points ahead of three-time champion Fred Ryland of Brentwood in the battle for fifth.
Meanwhile, Alfred Johnson is the top rookie in the standings and seventh overall. However, fellow rookie Trent Golden of Pittsburg has moved to within nine points of Johnson after a season-best second place finish last time out.
Oakley's James East fell short of a second-straight win in the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks last time out in second. Despite Grayson Baca of Brentwood winning for the second time, East holds a three point lead in the championship battle. East leads the field with six Top 5 finishes in seven starts.
Meanwhile, Antioch's Jewel Crandall used her third Top 5 finish of the season to maintain third in the standings, 46 points out of the lead and four ahead of Oakley's Hunter Hammett in a closer battle for third. Hammett enjoyed his best finish to date two weeks ago in third.
Oakley's Charlie Bryant had an eventful race last time out but somehow managed a ninth place finish. That keeps him 13 points behind Crandall in the race for third and only five points ahead of Larry McKinzie Jr of Discovery Bay.
With another disastrous night, Oakley's Aidan Ponciano fell further out of the championship battle in seventh as Maddie Motts of San Pablo, Brentwood's Jesse Paladino and James Thomson of Pittsburg round out the Top 10 coming into this race.
Brentwood's Fred Ryland scored a division leading third win last time out in the IMCA Stock Cars, moving him 11 points ahead of State point leader Austin Van Hoff of Chowchilla and 14 over Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista. Van Hoff and Ryland are the only two drivers with five Top 5 finishes.
Mitch Enos of Manteca sits fourth in the standings, two ahead of Rio Vista's Jason Robles and five in front of Jake Archibald of Oakley. Archibald leads Pittsburg's Jared Baugh by six points in the rookie race.
Anthony Slaney of Martinez impressed with his second Late Model win last time out. With his second place finish, However, Auburn's Ray Trimble moved into the track point lead by six ahead of reigning champion Rod Oliver of Yuba City. Trimble won the Xtreme Late Model race at Placerville last week. He was the point leader in that series going into the night and is likely to still be the leader when the latest standings are released.
Further back in third is Shawn DeForest of Livermore, who won the season opener. He has a 14 point advantage over Belmont's Tim Yaeger with Slaney back in fifth.
Antioch Speedway concludes the month of June with a special occasion remembering Jerry and Mary Ann Hetrick. The lineup of IMCA sanctioned divisions, Hobby Stocks and Late Models will offer plenty of exciting racing from the green flag to the checkered.
The gates will open at 4:00 with the first race starting at 6:00.
