Jake Morgan Wins Cameron Martin Memorial At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...June 21...Jake Morgan of Fair Oaks won the 25 lap Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the Cameron Martin Memorial race, and it was also the fourth win of the season for Morgan. The win paid $2,511 to Morgan, who also collected the $500 bonus for leading the 11th lap.
Morgan charged ahead of the pack at the green flag, and Bob Newberry of Brentwood made a low pass in Turn 4 of the second lap to take the second position from Shawn Arriaga of Antioch. A yellow flag waved on the fifth lap for a Turn 2 tangle involving Josh Gillis of Sacramento and San Jose's Anthony Bruno. Morgan continued to lead Newberry and Arriaga on the restart, and Morgan started pulling away from the pack. Shannon Newton of Elk Grove took third from Arriaga on the restart, and a Lap 8 yellow flag waved for Daniel DeKeyser of Kelseyville on the back straightaway.
It was once again Morgan leading Newberry and Newton on the restart, but the race was red flagged on Lap 11 when Jarrett Soares of Gilroy flipped in Turn 4. He was okay, but he joined Arriaga in the pits. Morgan maintained command on the restart ahead of Newberry and Newton, but a Turn 4 pass on Lap 16 gained Roseville's Josh Young the third position.
A yellow flag for Ryan Siverling of Concord in Turn 2 bunched the field for the final time on Lap 19. However, Morgan maintained command on the restart and brought it home to the big victory. Newberry held off Young over the final laps for a hard fought second as Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill and Shawn Jones of San Jose rounded out the Top 5.
Sean Catucci of Brentwood won his fourth 15 lap Dwarf Car Main Event of the season. It came after some serious pressure from Rookie David Hays of Brentwood in the waning laps.
Catucci jumped into the Main Event lead at the start. Hays settled into an early second in the non-stop event, followed by reigning champion Travis Day of Concord. Catucci and Hays pulled away a little bit by the mid-race point, and Hays was trying various lines in an effort to attempt a pass.
On the final lap, Hays dove deep into Turn 1 and emerged with the lead before pushing on exit in Turn 2. Catucci moved by on the inside and held off Hays in the final turn for the hard fought victory. Hays settled for his third-straight runner up finish, followed by Day, David Michael Rosa Antioch and Antioch's David Rosa.
Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was the third-straight win for the current point leader and reigning track champion.
Brown won the six lap heat race earlier and jumped into the Main Event lead at the green flag. He rapidly pulled ahead of everybody in the non-stop event, lapping the third and fourth place cars on the 10th lap. Brown won by over half a lap ahead of Don Abitz of Pittsburg. Rookie Ryder Holmen of Antioch got out of shape exiting Turn 4 on Lap 14 and surrendered the third position to Matt Wirth of Oakland.
Joel Hannagan of San Jose won the 15 lap Hardtop Main Event. This was the second-straight win for the current point leader.
Hannagan took the lead at the green flag and proceeded to lead all 15 laps for the victory. Don Slaney and Martinez collected his third-straight second place finish and finished on the lead lap as Joe Shenefield of Roseville settled for third.
Racing resumes next Saturday night with the 10th Annual Hetrick Memorial race. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars will be back along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks and Late Models.
