Clymens, Shafer, Baca, Ryland, Smith Win On Fan Appreciation Night At Antioch Speedway
Antioch, CA...June 14...Trevor Clymens of Brentwood won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The second win of the season for Clymens came on Fan Appreciation Night and was assisted by mechanical issues on point leader Kenny Shrader's car with two laps to go.
Kelly Campanile of Oakley set the early pace with Clymens moving into second ahead of Shrader on a Lap 2 restart. The lead three cars ran closely, and Shrader made a big inside move in Turn 4 of the fifth lap to take the lead. Moments later, championship contender Jason Ryan Jr stalled in Turn 2 for a yellow flag. Shrader continued to lead Clymens and Brentwood's Fred Ryland on the restart. Shrader seemed to have everybody covered for much of the race as Ryland and Clymens battled fiercely for second.
A low pass in Turn 4 of the 12th lap gained Ryland second, and the yellow flag flew for the final time on Lap 16 for Tommy Clymens Jr of Oakley. Ryland had a major push on the restart lap in Turn 2 as Shrader led Trevor Clymens and Trent Golden of Pittsburg. With two laps to go, Shrader slowed noticeably as Clymens moved to the inside to make a pass. Trent Golden made a big move on the back straightaway into second on the last lap, and Trevor Clymens would prevail ahead of Golden, Campanile, State point leader Danny Wagner of Bay Point and Ryland.
Randy Shafer of Vacaville won the 20 lap IMCA Modified Main Event. Shafer led from the outset and repelled a mid race restart challenge from point leader Troy Foulger of Oakley to claim the victory.
Shafer led Matt Kampfraat of Granite Bay at the start. A Lap 2 restart saw Foulger settling into second behind Shafer as Andrew Pearce of Oakley moved into third. A yellow flag waved for Eric Berendsen of Antioch in Turn 4 on Lap 9. On the restart lap, Foulger attempted a slide job pass in Turn 3 for the lead, but Shafer slid in front of Foulger exiting Turn 4 to lead the lap. The lead trio pulled away from the pack with Pearce challenging Foulger for second. A low pass in Turn 4 of the 18th lap finally gained Pearce the position. However, nobody was stopping Shafer as he won ahead of Pearce, Foulger, Jonathan Hagio of Prunedale and Clark Gulielmoni of Vacaville.
Grayson Baca of Brentwood won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. This was his second win of the season.
James East of Oakley set the early pace ahead of Oakley's Michaela Taylor. Hunter Hammett of Oakley settled into third on a Lap 3 restart and moved into second a lap later with Baca following him into third. East led a Lap 6 restart with Baca moving around Hammett for second. A low pass in Turn 4 of the eighth lap gained Baca the lead. There were two yellow flags during the last 10 laps, but Baca continued to lead East on each restart. They finished in that order with Hammett third, followed by Jewell Crandall and Todd Gomez, both of Antioch
Fred Ryland of Brentwood won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. This was the third win of the season for the current point leader, and it came after an intense battle with Jason Robles of Rio Vista.
Robles had a front row start and charged into the lead ahead of Oakley's Jake Archibald. A low move in Turn 4 of the second lap put State point leader Austin Van Hoff of Chowchilla into second. Robles had a straightaway advantage over Van Hoff by Lap 4 as Ryland made a Turn 3 pass to settle into third. A yellow flag waved on Lap 7 for Archibald in Turn 1. Robles maintained the lead on the restart with Ryland getting a good run on him in second.
The lead duo pulled away from the pack with a Turn 2 pass gaining Kenneth Robles of Rio Vista third on Lap 11. Ryland made a low pass in Turn 4 of the 13th lap to take the lead from Jason Robles, but Robles made an inside pass in Turn 2 to reclaim the spot a lap later. The side by side battle continued until Ryland went low in Turn 4 on Lap 16 to reclaim the lead for good. Ryland went on to victory from there ahead of Jason Robles, Kenneth Robles, Van Hoff and Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley.
Ryan Smith of Coalinga won the 30 lap Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series Main Event. This was the second-straight win for Smith, who picked up the victory at the Larry Damitz Memorial two weeks earlier.
Smith led the opening lap ahead of Brentwood's Fred Ryland and Phil Marino of Chico. Ryland made a low pass in Turn 4 of the second lap to take the lead. Previous Antioch winner Mike Learn of Petaluma settled into third on Lap 3, and a Lap 7 yellow flag waved for Chad Hammer of Antioch in Turn 4.
Ryland continued to lead Smith and Learn when the race resumed. Learn stalled in Turn 2 for a Lap 18 yellow flag. On the restart, Smith got a good run and made an inside pass in Turn 4 to grab the lead. Ryland tried to get underneath him to regain first on Lap 20, but Smith led the lap. Smith began to pull away and went on to victory ahead of Ryland, Marino, Learn and Brent Lawrence of Grass Valley.
Racing resumes next Saturday night with the Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series running the Cameron Martin Memorial race. Also competing will be the Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks and Hardtops.
