NARC 410 Sprint Cars Return To Antioch Speedway For Contra Costa County Clash

Antioch, CA...As we move further along in Springtime, the weather gets nicer and the conditions are even better for great racing at Antioch Speedway. This Saturday night will be one of the bigger shows of the season on the 3/8 mile clay oval. It's the first appearance of the NARC Winged 410 Sprint Cars.

The event is also the Third Annual Contra Costa County Clash. Joining them for the occasion will be the BCRA/WMR Midgets for the Ken Graunstadt Memorial race. For open wheel enthusiasts, this is a night that you won't want to miss.

While Antioch Speedway has been fortunate enough to run every race scheduled this year, the NARC 410 Sprint Car Tour has had two rainouts and two successful events. The wins so far have gone to 2019 champion DJ Netto of Hanford at Stockton and Watsonville's Justin Sanders at the Mini Gold Cup in Chico most recently.

The win for Sanders in the Mini Gold Cup came ahead of rising young star Tanner Holmes of Jacksonville, Oregon, Templeton's Kaleb Montgomery and Netto. Holmes has rapidly risen through the ranks of the Outlaw Kart circuit in Oregon to become a star on the Sprint Car circuit as he races across the country.

In fact, Holmes picked up one of his biggest victories in the Silver Cup race at Chico back in March, where he held off the hard charging Sanders for the win. Montgomery, meanwhile, picked up his biggest Wingless 410 Sprint Car win last week in a USAC/CRA Sprint Car race in Santa Maria.

Montgomery finds himself trailing Netto after two races on the NARC circuit. Netto has a 280-275 advantage with Fremont's Shane Golobic seven points back and seven-time Chico 360 Sprint Car champion Sean Becker 10 points out of the lead.

It's early in the battle, and several other top drivers are jockeying for position. The ranking order finds Tanner Carrick of Lincoln fifth with 269 points, followed by Sanders (268) Tim Kaeding of San Jose (268), Holmes (267), Dylan Bloomfield of Oakley (264) and Tyler Thompson of Harrisburg, Oregon (260).

Bloomfield had one of his better finishes on the NARC circuit last year at Antioch in third behind Sanders and Golobic. In fact, Antioch fans will know him as the 2020 Wingless Spec Sprint championship runner-up. Since then, young Dylan has ranked third twice in the Sprint Car Challenge Tour standings and was fifth on the NARC circuit last year.

The first BCRA/WMR Midgets California Super Series race took place in Placerville last month, and Golobic got the win on that occasion, followed by TJ Smith of Fresno, Tanner Carrick of Lincoln and two-time reigning BCRA champion Caden Sarale of Stockton.

Sarale leads the BCRA/WMR Super Series standings in his bid for three BCRA championships in a row. He leads Sacramento's Dane Culver by 17 points, Todd Hawse of Moor Park by 18, Blaine Craft of Elk Grove by 20 and Ryan Carter of Manteca by 22. Sarale finds himself trailing Smith by five points in the USAC race. Though this is not an official USAC event, there could be a few drivers making the trip up north to be at Antioch.

This is also the Second Annual Ken Graunstadt Memorial for the Midgets. Ken was such a great supporter of the BCRA Midgets and other open wheel racing efforts on the West Coast that the BCRA decided to make a race for him when he passed away last year.

The first race was won by Sarale ahead of Castro Valley's Jake Andreotti and Brandon Wiley of Santa Maria. Andreotti was a feature winner at Antioch the previous year, and Sarale wrapped up his second-consecutive BCRA title last year when he won their finale at Antioch, followed by Culver and Peter Paulson of Woodland.

In recent years, BCRA has encouraged and welcomed the WMR competitors to support their shows. WMR was created after following the blueprint of the successful Northwest Focus Midget effort in Washington and Oregon. They run a more affordable Ecotec motor program that has met with big success on the Northwest Focus circuit.

WMR has also seen much success and has brought drivers into Midget racing that may not have otherwise gotten involved. In fact, WMR champions Blake Bower and Bryant Bell are now competing in Sprint Cars.

BCRA and WMR teamed up for the California Super Series, which offers $2,000 to win at each event and a minimum of $200 to start. There are also other bonuses offered for things such as fast time and heat race wins. WMR has had a pair of races, won by Anthony Bruno of San Jose and Santa Cruz's Logan Mitchell, who finished second in the other race.

Bruno was the highest finishing WMR competitor at the series opener in Placerville. WMR will be offering a $1,000 year-end price to the Underdog champion in this series. This award will be decided among the WMR-legal competitors. The highest WMR-legal competitor in points will collect the prize.

Open wheel fans will want to be at Antioch Speedway this Saturday night. Winged 410 Sprint Cars are the fastest cars you'll find anywhere on the dirt on the West Coast, and there could be a group of over 20 of them this week. Furthermore, the joint effort between BCRA and WMR should produce a strong field of Midgets.

The gates will open at 4:00 with the first race starting at 6:00. Adult tickets are $35, Senior/Military $25, Kids (5-12) $25 and kids four and under free.
